Throughout my life, I’ve been passionate about family histories, helping others and finding the best solutions for problems big and small. The first leg of my career (28 plus years) was spent in Wealth Management and Private Banking, working with multigenerational and business-owning families. Their fascinating stories and unique journeys offered the rewarding experience of providing guidance while creating lifelong relationships based upon understanding, confidentiality, and trust. It wasn’t simply financial; legacy and preparing future generations were of the utmost importance. Along the way, my appreciation and interest in visual art grew tremendously.
Some of my clients were art collectors, and they generously shared their insights with me. This ‘on the job’ education was a terrific enhancement to my professional knowledge about Art Credit, Estate Planning, and other important topics. Equally important, it was an excellent primer and a deeper dive into the different aspects of the art ecosystem: museums, galleries, auction houses, insurance and transportation carriers, conservation and restoration, art fairs, arts organizations and of course, artists.
Over time, it became apparent that despite well-crafted estate and financial plans, there were often gaps and disconnects that weren’t being addressed. Open conversations between donors and beneficiaries about inheritance, wealth and future expectations were often one-sided, incomplete or didn’t happen at all.
For many artists, the business side of the industry is overwhelming and difficult to navigate while creating work that will establish a satisfying career and promote financial stability.
So, I set out to build a business that draws upon my diverse background to address matters involving art, philanthropy, and business. Through my network, I’m proud to recommend other professionals and experts to help clients assemble a strong team. MJG Advisory works with artists, art collectors and organizations seeking to collaborate on 3 important R’s: Resources, Recognition, and Rewards. Whether you are an artist seeking representation or a collector pondering donative intent, the ultimate focus is on legacy planning and development: why it’s important, what you wish to be remembered for, and how it can be achieved.
In addition to advocating for the arts in my home community and elsewhere, I serve on several not-for-profit boards and enjoy writing both the occasional grant as well as articles (author or contributor), as well as speaking engagements.
It all begins with a conversation, and I’d love to hear what’s on your mind!
Kindest Regards,
Julie Gustafson
